Catarina is a first generation coffee grower who lives with her
family in Aldea Com in Huehuetenango. Catarina and her husband
started small with coffee with a couple of small parcels of land, and
as they saw increased income they began adding more land to
their holdings to grow coffee.
Lot Info //Â
Finca Gomez is named for her husband’s last name.
This coffee is picked by hand and is processed the same day at
the small wet mill near the farm. After being depulped, the coffee is
set to ferment for 22-24 hours with no additional water added. The
coffee is dried in the sun for about 4 days, about 8 hours each day,
and is turned frequently. The responsibility for processing is shared
between Catarina, her husband, and her workers.
“Coffee is a crop that allows us to hire others for employ-
ment, with the goal of mutually helping both parties. Coffee is the lifeblood of the family, it allows us to generate income
that supports the family.”
